The Preacher's Toolbox Workshop for the Texas Conference

The Perkins Center for Preaching Excellence at SMU, together with the Texas Conference, UMC, offers workshops for pastors who preach without being seminary trained. The goal is to provide a set of exegetical and homiletical skills, along with theological reflection on the purpose of preaching to raise the effectiveness of their sermons to the next level. The workshops will be led by Rev. Dr. O. Wesley Allen, Jr. - the Lois Craddock Perkins Professor of Homiletics at Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University.
The registration fee is only $25!
The price includes lunch, follow-up preaching zooms with Dr. Allen, and a copy of his book, The Preacher’s Bible Handbook (as a gift from your district).

- Thursday, April 18th, 2024, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm, in the greater Houston area at Spring, Faith UMC
- Saturday, April 20th, 2024, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm, at Lakeview Methodist Conference Center

- Interpreting a Scripture passage for preaching
- Choosing one theme for the sermon that is theologically sound, fitting to the congregation, and faithful to the text in context
- Choosing a sermon form that moves from itch to scratch
- Honing our attentiveness to imagery, story, and scene in Scripture and life
- Developing effective techniques for delivering the sermon appropriate to the preacher’s character, personality, and context
