Welcome to another episode of Must Reads where Dr. Jeffrey Frymire, Associate Professor of Homiletics and Dean of Chapel at Asbury Theological Seminary, discusses a book he edited: “Preaching from Inside the Story: A Fresh Journey into Narrative.”

Dr. Jeffrey Frymire, Associate Professor of Homiletics and Dean of Chapel at Asbury Theological Seminary, discussed his latest book, "Preaching from Inside the Story: A Fresh Journey into Narrative," in an interview with Must Reads. He highlighted the tendency of preachers to strip narrative of its power by replacing it with points, advocating instead for a narrative approach rooted in solid exegesis. Frymire emphasized that narratives offer more than just words on a page; they provide space for exploration and understanding beyond mere facts. Drawing from neuroscience, he explained that humans are wired for stories, learning best through imaginative engagement. He introduced the concept of "breaking a leg" as entering the story, advocating for preachers to immerse themselves in the narrative to convey its emotional depth effectively. Frymire concluded that the power of storytelling lies in the story itself, not the performer.
