by Perkins Center for Preaching Excellence on Friday, August 1, 2025

This month, Dr. Allen interviewed Dr. J. Dwayne Howell on the impact of Walter Breuggeman’s life and scholarship for a “Classics” edition of Must Reads. Bruggeman passed away in June of this year at the age of 92, leaving a legacy of at least 53 books and trailblazing work with the Old Testament. Drs. Allen and Howell discuss Brueggemann’s renowned book The Prophetic ImaginationBrueggemann had a particular interest in the prophets and challenged preachers to imaginative disruption, emphasizing the role of a prophet as an uncompromising agitator. Dr. Allen and Dr. Howell also briefly discuss Finally Comes the Poet, which encourages poetic speech over prose. Another “must” for your library is The Collected Sermons of Walter Brueggmann, which is the final work that the professors discuss.
